About
Thirteen years of going deeper
HummingWave Technologies has been building the systems companies run on since 2013 — for ninety-odd of them, across payments, lending, energy, agriculture and everything that turned out to be interesting. The through-line is specialisation: a few kinds of system understood all the way down, rather than every kind understood well enough. The teams stay small because that is how the depth stays with the people doing the work.
The name
Where it comes from
Two words, and we meant both of them.
Humming
The sound of a place with something going on in it. We wanted the organisation to buzz — internally, and out in the wider technical community. The writing on this site is part of that, and so is the fact that engineers put their names on it.
Wave
The new wave of technology. Not just riding it — we would rather help shape it, which is why the work drifts toward the problems that do not have established answers yet.
Founders
Who started it
All three founders came from large IT organisations — Infosys, Mindtree and IBM. That is not incidental. They have seen from the inside what happens when a delivery model is built around adding people rather than depth, and a good deal of how this firm is shaped is a reaction to it.
Amit Singh
Co-founder & Chief ExecutiveAmit designs enterprise-grade systems and still does it personally — most of the architecture documents behind our platforms have his name on them. His interest runs to the places where systems get genuinely hard: serverless architecture, non-relational data at scale, enterprise integration, mobile, and machine learning applied to decisions people used to make by hand.
Before HummingWave he spent twenty-one years in the IT industry in leadership positions at Infosys and Mindtree.
Bachelor of Engineering, Computer Science — Bangalore University
MBA — Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore
Sandeep Koul
Co-founder & Chief Operating OfficerSandeep has spent his career building systems for banks and financial institutions, mostly in Europe — which is where a good deal of our instinct for regulated, high-consequence software comes from. He runs delivery, and the parts of a services business that determine whether good engineering actually reaches a client.
Before HummingWave he spent ten years in the IT industry, latterly as a senior manager at Infosys across programme management, client relationships and technology.
Bachelor of Engineering — Bangalore University
Certified Scrum Master
Vani Singh
Co-founder & PresidentVani builds products. Before HummingWave she took several enterprise software products from concept through design, development and launch at Infosys, Yantra, Sterling Commerce and IBM — the kind of software large companies run their supply chains on, where a product has to be right for thousands of customers rather than one.
At HummingWave she is also Chief Mentor, which is the job of making sure the depth this firm depends on is passed on rather than merely possessed.
Bachelor of Engineering, Computer Science — RV College of Engineering, Bangalore University
Executive leadership — eCornell and the Wharton School
The bet
Technology is where the money goes
Every firm allocates attention and budget across competing claims — sales, operations, administration, domain knowledge, finance, and technical depth. Most professional services firms resolve that in favour of sales, because sales is what fills the pipeline.
We resolved it the other way. Our budget and our management attention are biased, deliberately and somewhat uncomfortably, toward getting continuously better at the technology.
The consequences are visible on this website. We publish architecture reasoning rather than case studies with testimonials. We hire slowly for depth rather than quickly for availability. We decline work that does not need the depth. And we grow only when we are confident growth will not dilute it — which is a real constraint on revenue and one we accept.
The ambition beyond that is to stop merely mastering existing technology and start pushing it somewhere. That is a longer project than a website, but it is the direction.
Where we work
From Bangalore, for clients on four continents
We are based in Bangalore and build for companies in the United States, Europe, Australia, Singapore and across India. Roughly ninety clients over thirteen years, from a Swiss food multinational to a Rajasthan grain market.
One of the products we built — the world’s first mobile video interview platform — was acquired by Zoho. Several of our longest engagements are now into their seventh and eighth year, which we take as the more meaningful signal.
